321 Students to get Summer Jobs Under JSIF and NYS Programme

A total of 321 secondary and tertiary level students from inner-city communities across the island will be gainfully employed this summer through the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) and the National Youth Service’s Summer Employment Programme.
Social Development Officer at JSIF, Mareeca Brown, told JIS News today (July 12) that the programme, which is the first between JSIF and the NYS, is targeted at young people age 18 to 25, who are living in communities in Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon that are under the Inner City Basic Services Project.
These communities are Jones Town, Craig Town, Whitfield Town, Federal Gardens and Passmore Town/ Browns Town in Kingston and St. Andrew; Central Village, Africa, Tawes Pen, Shelter Rock, Lauriston and Knollis in St Catherine; Flankers in St. James; and Bucknor in Clarendon.
Miss Brown informed that participants will be placed in government and private sector organizations over a four-week period where they will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to survive in the working world, including proper work ethics.
“It will give them a grasp of the working world.while at the same time putting a little money into their pocket and helping them to understand the need for responsibility and money management and give them a sense of independence,” she pointed out.
An orientation session for participants from Kingston and St. Andrew will be held tomorrow (July 13) at the Emmanuel Apostolic Church at 12 Slipe Road.
Participants in St. Catherine will have their session on Monday (July 16) at the Arian’s Restaurant, Spanish Village Plaza, Twickenham Park; while the session in Clarendon will be held next week. Participants in St. James had their orientation session on July 6.
The initiative is expected cost the government approximately $6.5 million.
