The Full Story

A total of 29 young Jamaicans have been nominated for the Prime Minister’s National Youth Awards this year. The announcement and presentation of the awards will be made at the official ceremony to be held this Sunday, December 5 at the Emancipation Park in Kingston, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Co-ordinator of Youth Month activities at the National Centre for Youth Development, Layne Robinson told JIS News that the finalists were short listed from a record-breaking 57 nominations.
Awards will be handed to young persons who have distinguished themselves in areas such as leadership, academics, agriculture, sports, arts and culture, service and journalism.
“One of the main objectives of the Awards Programme is to recognize the work and worth of young Jamaicans through their achievements and excellence,” said Mr. Robinson.
“It also aims to encourage the wider population of young persons to understand that great things are happening in Jamaica, allowing them to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, such as crime and violence,” he added.
Mr. Robinson said the awardees would serve as role models to other young members of the society, and pointed out that the awards were not exclusive to resident Jamaicans, but also those living overseas.
The winners will receive an award made of marble/onyx, a rare mineral found only in some parts of Mexico.
The ceremony, which will be followed by the annual Jamaican Youth In Concert at the same venue, will feature performances by outstanding young talent, including dancehall act, TOK; ‘Rising Stars’ talent contest winner, Cavan; poet, Safiya Sinclair; violinist, Jessica Yap, and the Immaculate Conception High School Orchestra and Choir.
The Prime Minister’s National Youth Awards were first presented in 1998.
