The Full Story

The 2010 Kay Baxter Memorial Scholarship, in honour of the late Jamaican envoy, has been awarded to 22-year-old Stephanie Lawrence, a fourth-year computer science student attending the University of Toronto.
The announcement was made recently at the offices of the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto, Canada, by the administrator of the scholarship, the Independent United Order of Solomon (IUOS), headed by Jamaican-born Lloyd Seivright.
Consul General George Ramocan congratulated the awardee and had special commendations for Mr. Seivright and his group, which to date, have disbursed 99 scholarships to students attending Jamaican and Canadian universities.
The sponsor of the Kay Baxter scholarship, the Toronto Sun, was represented by Editor and Columnist, Lorrie Goldstein, who noted that Kay Baxter symbolised Jamaica’s motto, ‘Out of Many, One People’.
One of her three sons, Neal Baxter, who was present, said his mother was committed to children and helping them to excel, so would have been pleased to be associated with the scholarship.
The late Kay Baxter served as Consul General to Toronto from 1988 to 1992, and Consul General to New York from 1992 to 1997. The scholarship was created in her memory 13 years ago.
The IUOS, which recently announced a new scholarship to be named in memory of the late Michael Manley, also disburses scholarships to third-year medical students attending the University of the West Indies (UWI) and donates thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment and supplies to countries and organisations around the world.
All of the group’s 2010 scholarship awardees, from Jamaica and Canada, will be presented with their awards at the IUOS’ 32nd annual dinner and charitable presentation to be held on Saturday, September 25 at the Rameses Shriners Auditorium in Toronto.
The keynote speaker will be the Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Francis Marshalleck.
Dr. Marshalleck was the recipient of a medical scholarship from the IUOS in 1991, while attending medical school at the UWI.
