October 6, 2004

The Full Story

On Saturday, October 9, 200 young volunteers will participate in a ‘Volunteer and Share’ youth programme, with the objective of cleaning up the Negril area, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
The project is a collaborative effort of the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force, the National Youth Service (NYS), and the Negril Chamber of Commerce. The group is also working closely with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Delford Morgan and Dertel Moore.
Communications Liaison in the ONR, Tracey Hamilton told JIS News that the clean-up exercise, which would begin promptly at 6:00 a.m. would see work being carried out on the Norman Manley Boulevard, the beach front and east and west of the Negril round-about. Miss Hamilton said that members of youth clubs and service clubs in that region are being requested to come out and assist in the effort.
On the matter of incoming donations to help the hurricane victims, the Communications Liaison told JIS News that the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Zhao Zhenyu, would be handing over US$100,000 to the ONR on Thursday, October 7 at 3:00 p.m.
