The Full Story

Eleven contestants will vie for the Jamaica Child of the Year title on Saturday, May 5 at the inaugural staging of the competition.
The coronation show will be held at the Altamont Court Hotel in Kingston at 3:00 p.m., and is being co-ordinated by Help Our People Excel (HOPE) Production, a non-profit organization that was established in September 2006.
Executive Producer of HOPE Production, Marlene Knight-Brown, told JIS News that the competition placed strong emphasis on education.
“The contest is an educational one, where we focus on some of the work that the children are doing at school,” she said.
As such, Mrs. Knight-Brown noted that training for the contestants covered a number of areas, including art and craft, reading and writing, numeracy as well as group learning.
She also pointed out that the contestants received tips on developing their self-confidence, performing talent pieces and how to communicate effectively.
According to Mrs. Knight-Brown, the children were drawn from a number of primary and preparatory schools and are between six and eight years old.
“In recruiting these children, we wrote to the schools explaining our objectives. we then asked the schools to identify two students who were doing well academically. We had over 40 children participating in the eliminations,” she pointed out.
The competition is intended to motivate children to excel academically and also to help parents recognize the importance of spending quality time assisting their children, so that they may achieve better educational results.
Sponsors for the competition include Island Limousine and Car Rental, Power 106 F.M., Modern Rubber Stamp Manufacturer; Hi-Qo Art Gallery, Wellworth Electrical, Mandeville Courier Service, White Rose Sea Food, Cherry Types Ltd., Medallion Printers and Cecile Bridal Boutique.
In addition to the title of Jamaica Child of the Year, the winner will receive a cash prize of $5,000 from Guardian Life Ltd. and a gift voucher from Bashco to assist with the purchase of school supplies. The second and third place winners will receive trophies from WB Trophies.
HOPE Production is an initiative of the Mother of the Year, Norma Brown Aarons and third place winner, Marlene Knight-Brown. It is designed to make a positive contribution towards communities, assist in providing for the less fortunate, and assist the educational system by working with young children in Primary and Preparatory schools.
