1,000 New Street Lights for St. James

The St. James Parish Council has been allocated 1,000 new street lights for the entire parish.
This was announced yesterday (September 4) by the Director of Planning at the St. James Parish Council, Sophia Kerr-Reid.
She was speaking at a Physical Planning and Environment Committee meeting in the Council’s Chambers in Montego Bay.
Members of the Committee decided by vote, that the lights should be distributed to all parish council divisions, with the greater portion allocated to rural areas. The Council also urged the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) Limited to repair the malfunctioning street lights in the parish.
Most of the councillors present supported Mayor Noel Donaldson, who called on the JPSCo to give the public “value for money”.
“I believe the JPSCo has an obligation to constantly check the status of street lights and effect immediate repairs when they find them malfunctioning,” the Mayor emphasized.
“The company cannot continue to take tax payers’ money for a service they are not providing,” Mr. Donaldson declared.
Councillor Donald Colomathi in his contribution, stressed that the St. James Parish Council was a client of the JPSCo and should be provided service in a structured way.
“Mr. Chairman, it cannot be that we as councillors should be walking around with JPSCo representatives showing them which lights are not working. I have been calling for the longest while, that a special unit be set up by the JPSCo and given the responsibility to closely monitor the lights at all times,” Mr. Colomathi said.
