The Full Story

The National Housing Trust (NHT) will allocate $10.6 million to micro-enterprises that are created within its schemes, as part of a special drive to stimulate and build the economy.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, said the funds will be available as prize monies for a Special Small Business Entrepreneurship Award category in the Trust’s Best Schemes Competition.

“The primary purpose of the award is to encourage the development and commercialization of promising ideas emerging from homeowners. The competition will seek to highlight and encourage creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship originating at the community level,” Mrs. Simpson Miller said.

She made the announcement as she addressed the House of Representatives during the 2013/14 Budget presentation.

Mrs. Simpson Miller also informed that the agency will be introducing a mobile unit to reach those contributors and mortgagors in rural and deep rural Jamaica, and to sign up new ones.

The Prime Minister stated her agency’s commitment to creating a revolution in how Government does business, noting that the NHT is leading the way.

“We are already taking Government to the people and we are committed to ensuring that public service reaches the people in their communities,” she said.
