The Full Story

State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green is encouraging students who attended the recent Youth Forum to take the message of healthy lifestyle and good nutrition to their peers.

He was addressing the session staged by the National Child Month Committee (NCMC) at the St. Andrew Parish Church Hall.

More than 200 students attended the forum, which included presentations on various topics under the theme ‘Healthy Children Build a Stronger Nation’.

Minister Green said it is important for the students to keep the conversation going around the theme.

“It is very important that you don’t only read the theme, you don’t only participate in the dramatic pieces, but that you internalise the message that is being conveyed,” he said.

“We have to take stock of what we eat… such as the fast food. As much as we enjoy them we have to ensure that we have a balanced diet. Good nutrition is critical to maintaining good health,” he said.

“You  are the ones who can convince your peers to change the way in which they are living. You have the power to effect change in every area of your lives. You have the power to create a better Jamaica, the power to create a better school and the power to create a better future,” he added.

The Queen’s School presented a dramatic piece on the topic ‘The Relevance and Importance of Nutrition to Maintaining Good Health’; students of Charlie Smith High spoke about ‘The Relevance and Importance of Physical Activity to Maintaining Good Health’, while Wolmer’s Boys’ School focused on the ‘The Relevance and Importance of Mental Wellness to Maintaining Good Health’.

The Minister, who was the guest speaker at the Youth Forum, commended the NCMC for engaging the young people in discussions around issues that are relevant to their well-being.

Youth Month is being observed in November under the theme ‘E=MC2  Energising Youth’.

The Youth Forum remains one of several activities organised by the NCMC, which since its inception in 1953, has spearheaded the annual observance of Child Month.
