Youth in Agriculture Expo for Denbigh

March 16, 2004

The Full Story

The first ever National Youth in Agriculture Exposition will take place on March 18, at the Denbigh Agricultural Show Ground in Clarendon. It will be staged by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority’s (RADA) National Youth in Agriculture/Schools’ Agricultural Programme, which was established in 1990.
Since its inception, the programme has implemented several activities, such as school gardens, revolving loans, competitions and has created scholarships to promote youth involvement in agricultural pursuits.
Co-ordinator of the Expo, Brigette Williams told JIS News that the theme would be: ‘Youth reshaping agriculture through improved technology’. “We are encouraging young persons to take up the mantle and continue the practice of agriculture as they are innovative and they can grasp the new technologies quite quickly,” she said.
On display will be a range of technologies, such as container gardening, where gardening is done in a small area; the traditional field; tissue culture and hydroponics, which cover growing vegetables and ornamental plants in water.
Miss Williams pointed out that growing plants using hydroponics was much more convenient, as the plants could be monitored for diseases that might be soil or air borne.
Agriculture based institutions such as Knockalva Agricultural School, Sydney Pagon Agricultural School, Ebony Park HEART Academy and the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) will mount displays.
They will be joined by technical organizations such as Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the Ridge to Reef Project and RADA.There will be a circumposing (a plant propagation technique that gives a high level of plants) competition and a prize for the best display.
“The competitions will help to promote more agricultural skills as we believe that once these skills are developed, the students will be able to earn a living from them,” Miss Williams noted.
She indicated that invited schools had shown a high level of interest in participating in the expo. Primary, secondary and tertiary institutions islandwide were asked to participate.
The official ceremony will begin at 9.00 a.m and the expo will continue until 6.00 p.m.
