York Town Residents Attend Community Development Fair

February 13, 2004

The Full Story

Residents of York Town in Clarendon benefited from a community development fair, hosted by the York Town Community Development Committee (CDC) on February 12.
The fair was held in collaboration with several Government agencies, including the Registrar General’s Department, HEART Trust/NTA, the Social Development Commission (SDC), and Youth.now, a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the primary objective of promoting positive sexual behaviour among adolescents in Jamaica.
Community Development Officer at the SDC, Hazel Vaz, told JIS News that the event was a collective effort, which demonstrated good governance.
“Citizens in the community have made good use of the opportunities presented by identifying the issues affecting them, assisting with the planning of this activity and making contact with the various agencies for the activity. The pooling of ideas and resources has been clearly seen,” she said.
Cecile Banton, Acting Regional Manager for the Southern Region of the Registrar General’s Department pointed out that the department was willing to use any opportunity to serve within the community.
“We have an interest in serving outside of our formal offices, because we recognize the cost of coming to us in terms of time, travel and the service itself. We also find that persons are more comfortable in a less formal environment where they are able to discuss personal issues. We want other communities to invite us in and this will help to alleviate the overcrowding at our corporate offices,” she said.
President of the York Town CDC, Maschell Spencer, said that the fair was intended to bring important information to the community, particularly concerning application for birth certificates. “I thought it was a good turn out and persons have benefited,” he said.
More than 150 residents from York Town and adjoining communities, such as Crooks Gate, Gravel Hill and Rhymesbury participated in the fair. Several needy residents also received food packages from the CDC.
