World Post Week to be Observed from Oct. 5 to 10

October 3, 2003

The Full Story

The Postal Corporation of Jamaica will be joining its counterpart organisations worldwide in the celebration of World Post Week from October 5 to 10 under the theme: ‘Broaden Your Horizon’.
In an interview with JIS News, Deputy Postmaster General, Carolle Hainsley, pointed out that the theme reflected the fact that the post office system has been evolving over the years, and given international changes, Jamaica’s postal service would have to broaden its horizon and focus on new businesses and new ways for delivering messages and services to its many customers.
In light of this, Miss Hainsley said the vision of the Postal Corporation “is to become a very efficient facilitator of communication for development, through a reliable and secure service”. She said the organisation hoped to pursue this vision through its many offices islandwide via a wide range of customer service initiatives.
She highlighted development in the service over the years to include Paymaster service, which facilitates the collection of water, telephone and electricity payments at post offices; the sale of phone cards; money transfer services; micro-credit facilities; and the encashment of pension vouchers.
There is also collection and payment for water tanks. This relates to a programme which is conducted through the Ministry of Water and Housing, where some rural areas are provided with tanks and pay for them through the post offices. They also purchase water tickets through the post offices when the tanks are to be filled.
For the Week, each post office islandwide will observe a customer appreciation day. This will involve a special promotion of all the services offered at the post offices as well as entertainment and the serving of refreshment.
The week will begin on Sunday, October 5 with a national church service at the Gregory Park Baptist Church in St. Catherine beginning at 10:00 a.m. Other regions will be having church services on that day as well.
On World Post Day, October 9, a message from the Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) will be circulated to all 189 member countries.
