Watershed Management gets Funding

April 1, 2004

The Full Story

The Watershed Management and Protection Project in the Ministry of Land and Environment is to receive $1 million to continue with the management and protection of the island’s watersheds and natural resources.
This sum has been set aside in the 2004-2005 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.
Local management committees and community based organisations will receive ongoing capacity building and inputs for watershed conservation activities as the project seeks to co-ordinate a new thrust in watershed management at national, parish and community levels.
It also aims to develop and implement appropriate information systems; facilitate the work of local watershed management committees; provide land use information for problem analysis, planning and development; map watershed natural resource users and land capacity; and reduce the incidence and impact of bush fires on watershed resources and ecosystems.
Work is to be completed in the Great River Watershed Management Unit in the parishes of Hanover, St. James and Westmoreland.
Also, $1 million each has been allocated to the Parks and Protected Areas Species Habitat Monitoring project and the Public Education and Information Project. The objective of the former is to establish and manage a system for protected areas, both directly and through appropriate delegation using a variety of strategic co-management partnerships and contractual arrangements with the public sector, non-governmental organizations, community groups, private individuals and companies. The Public Education and Information project is concerned with creating greater awareness of the importance of the environment and emphasizing methods of conservation, protection and usage of available natural resources in a sustainable way. This involves reviewing existing strategies and developing new ones to complement current programmes and activities, updating existing material, and producing new material, including print and audio visual.
