November 4, 2003

The Full Story

The Government is moving to amend legislation within the water sector in order to harmonise the laws with the National Water Sector Policy and to eliminate overlaps and conflicts.
A Bill titled the National Water Commission (Amendment) Act 2003, is to be tabled shortly in Parliament.
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Monday (Nov. 3), Minister of Information, Burchell Whiteman said, “among other things, this new Bill will empower the Commission to connect premises located in the vicinity of major sewage facilitates, with the owner/occupier being liable for the cost incurred by the Commission to connect the said premises”.
Additionally, the Minister said that the amendment would remove from the NWC the power to issue licences to prospective water providers. “The NWC will be one of the agencies providing supplies instead of being the agency which licenced other people,” the Minister explained.
