Tour companies and hotel operators are to benefit from a 15 per cent reduction on custom duties for Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and other high-end motor vehicles.
These industry players will also be exempt from special consumption tax (SCT), as part of the Government’s stimulus package.
Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, made the announcement at a press briefing at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices on September 3.
He said the package will take immediate effect and continue until March 31, 2010, adding that the adjustments will be applicable to cars with engine size not exceeding 3000 CCs for gas, and 3200 CCs for diesel.
“This, we think, will significantly enable our ground transportation partners to refurbish and to bring in new and quality vehicles, so that our response in the winter season and onwards can be at the top level that we ought to have It, (the benefit) is only applicable to industry players who have operated under licences by the tourism industry,” he added.
Prior to the adjustment in rates on duties, the industry benefitted from a 30 per cent custom duty on motor vehicles.
The adjustment is part of the stimulus package, which the Government has put in place to ensure that the industry operates efficiently up to and throughout the winter tourist season and the recession.
