Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, has lauded the University of the West Indies (UWI) for expanding the training offered for Engineering.

The Minister, who was addressing the official opening of the UWI Mona Campus Science and Engineering Branch Library in St. Andrew today (May 17), said “significant” growth will come from the institution’s focus on Engineering.

Dr. Wheatley told the gathering that the rebranding of the Science library, to incorporate Engineering, will push development of the subject in Jamaica, which is one of the key economic drivers for social advancement.

“It is crucial that as we strive to achieve economic-growth targets, we also simultaneously develop the capacity of our people,” he said, adding that science, energy and technology are key to growing the economy.

He said the Government is committed to the industries and the development of human capital, and has implemented several programmes and policies to promote matriculation into “these areas of study”.

The Administration, Dr.  Wheatley argued, is ensuring that an environment is created that encourages more persons to desire training in the various disciplines and specialties relevant to Jamaican industry, with emphasis on the postgraduate and postdoctoral levels.

He encouraged the students to use the opportunity that they have been provided with “wisely”, as the library is comfortable, spacious and is designed to help “you maximise your learning outcomes”.
