The Full Story

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) through consultation with the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), is reporting significant progress to date with fighting the fire at the Riverton disposal site.

Operational activities will be sustained throughout today with targeted deployment of resources at the remaining areas that are burning.

The almost calm wind conditions could result in the smoke remaining over some parts of the Corporate Area and sections of the Portmore community for much of the day.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) is optimistic that the JFB will be able to meet the timeline of total extinguishing by tomorrow (Saturday,  March 21, 2015).

Members of the public should continue to observe safety tips released by the ODPEM to minimize their exposure to the effects of the smoke.  Where necessary, medical assistance should be sought.

Tips for Protecting Yourself

  • Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
  • Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimize the effects of the smoke.
  • The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should not expose themselves to the smoke.
