Director General of The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Major Clive Davis is reassuring the public that significant progress has been realized.

“The ODPEM acknowledges reports from members of the public regarding lingering smoke cover in areas such as Portmore and parts of Kingston and St Andrew. It is important to note that based on the depth, size and magnitude of the fire, some smoke could still be evident even after the fire has been extinguished.

I know that the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) team is also contending with menacing changes in wind directions and speeds which can influence the movement and concentration of smoke. . The team continues to work to return the situation to normalcy.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) located at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will remain active over the weekend and continues to urge that members of the public to observe safety tips released by the ODPEM to minimize their exposure to the effects of the smoke

.
Tips for Protecting Yourself
 Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
 Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimize the effects of the smoke.
 The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should pay particular attention not to expose themselves to the smoke.
