The Full Story

The daytime operations at the Riverton City Disposal Site today yielded much success. The Jamaica Fire Brigade was able to focus its attention on the last two remaining areas of concern. They have reported that based on the achievements of today there should be a significant reduction in the levels of smoke emission.

The operations as usual will continue into the night.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) wishes to assure the public that all available resources are being brought to bear on this situation in order to ensure that the situation returns to normalcy in the shortest possible time.

Additionally it may be instructive to note that this is the largest fire to have ever occurred at this facility. In the past, much smaller fires were extinguished in 2-3 weeks. Based on the operational plan and the execution of that said plan, this fire is being addressed in under two (2) weeks.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management deeply regrets the occurrence and resulting impacts of this incident.
