Upcoming Budget to Reflect Economic Growth – Says Minister Whiteman

Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman has said that the 2004/05 Budget presentation by Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Omar Davies scheduled for next month, should reflect a year of economic growth and social stability.
“It is a year beginning on the basis of a very important Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Some hard evidence of investment and good prospects therefore for growth,” he said.
Mr. Whiteman was responding to questions posed by journalists on Monday (March 29) at the weekly post-Cabinet Press Briefing at Jamaica House.
Meanwhile, Wednesday (March 31) will be the State Opening of Parliament where Governor-General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke will deliver the Throne Speech in the morning.
Following on that there will be the Tabling of the Estimates of Expenditure in the afternoon. The Standing Finance Committee will deliberate on the Estimates of Expenditure from April 6-8 at Gordon House.
The opening of the Budget Debate by the Finance Minster will be on April 15 while the Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Audley Shaw will make his presentation on April 20.
Leader of the Opposition, Edward Seaga is scheduled to contribute to the Budget Debate on April 22 and Prime Minister P.J. Patterson will make his presentation on April 27. Minister Davies will then close the Budget Debate on April 28.
