Two Shelters to be Established for Domestic Violence Victims

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, says two shelters are to be established for victims of domestic violence.

He said space for the facilities has already been identified and inspection reports have been completed.

One of the shelters will be located in the urban area and the other will be situated in rural Jamaica.

The Governor-General, who was delivering the Throne Speech at Gordon House on February 9, said the Administration strongly rejects domestic violence.

He noted that the Bureau of Gender Affairs will lead the process of ensuring adequate prevention, protection and redress for the most vulnerable in the society under the 2017-2027 National Strategic Plan to eliminate gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, the Governor-General informed that as the country celebrates its 55th year of Independence this year, 36 heritage sites will be revitalised with a view to introducing tours and extending tour packages.

Turning to sports, he noted that a feasibility study is to be conducted with a view to offering direction in the development and marketing of Jamaica as an international training hub across a variety of sporting disciplines.

“Jamaica’s climate and other features make the country well placed to attract this kind of business,” he said.

He noted that through the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), the Government will invest in the establishment of a number of multipurpose mini-stadia/sport facilities that will support this initiative.

Planned refurbishment of the National Stadium will also take place. The Governor-General’s Throne Speech was themed: ‘A Firm Foundation for Prosperity’.
