The Full Story

On a day (Teacher’s Day) when the country’s teachers are recognized for their tireless work in the classroom, Minister of Education, Youth and Culture, Maxine Henry-Wilson today (May 5) presented gifts to two inner-city schools in her South Eastern St. Andrew Constituency.
One such school was West Indies Basic School on Camp Road, where both teachers and students of the 17 year-old institution witnessed the handing over of a cheque valued at $60,000 by Minister Henry-Wilson to the school.
The Jamaica National Building Society made the contribution, which will go towards the physical refurbishing of the school. In her remarks, Minister Henry-Wilson said, “this is just part of the support that we are giving to the school and it is really a contribution from Jamaica National Building Society. We have been speaking to different companies and trying to see how they can help with the effort”.
She told JIS News that the funds were secured after writing to several institutions for assistance. “I have said to the enterprises that it is not just money that we need but some of the schools need managerial assistance. Some of them need people to come in and help with training of the staff and we are still pursuing that,” she said.
In her response, Monica Glashin, Principal of the School said, “we would like to thank Jamaica National Building Society for their kind donation. We hope that you will continue to support us and whatever you give it will enhance the community and learning on a whole”.
She said that the funds would be used to set up a swing and a monkey bar on the grounds to enhance the students’ growth and motor skills.
The Minister also presented gifts to teachers of the Nannyville Basic School on Mountain View Avenue. Mrs. Henry-Wilson further disclosed that an application has been made to the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund for assistance to further develop the school.
