The Full Story

With four weeks to go before  March 31, the Transport Authority is appealing to owners and operators of public passenger and commercial vehicles to come in and renew their road licences for the 2014/2015 year.

The call was made by Manager, Finance and Planning, Transport Authority, Mr. Karey Rowe, at a  recent JIS ‘Think Tank’.

Mr. Rowe explained that all road licences expire on March 31 each year and  in order to have a smooth transition,  licensing begins six weeks prior to the expiry date.

He said the Authority is encouraged by the overwhelming response that resulted in 1,000 road licences being renewed on the first day of the 2014/2015 licensing period, February 17, up from just under 300 for the corresponding period last year.

Mr. Rowe is attributing the increase to improved communication with all stakeholders, including the use of text messaging. “One of the strategies this year was to put the information out there and encourage them to come in early. We spent most of the year just communicating and we have had a number of town hall meetings, so nothing came as a surprise. We are hoping that everybody will come in before March 31,”he said.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Authority, Mr. Donald Foster, said the organization is working to avoid the rush that usually comes with the  licensing of over 50,000 vehicles within a six-week period.

“The Authority is using amendments in our legislation and regulation to drive the improvements that we want to see. We are working with the Government to use the anniversary date as the basis for renewing licences,” he noted.
