Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Lester Mike Henry, is calling on Jamaicans to exercise caution on the roads during the Yuletide season.

In his Christmas message, Mr. Henry lamented the fact that the 362 persons who have already been killed in road crashes far exceed the target, “despite our best efforts to keep the figure below 300”.

“The statistics indicate that speeding and improper overtaking have been the leading factors for the crashes,” he added.

Mr. Henry also highlighted the harm that can be done to persons who do not wear seatbelts and helmets as required by law, and to young children who are not placed in appropriate child-restraint systems. “I appeal to you, let us all be here next year,” he said.

The Minister noted that drinking and driving is generally at its peak during the holiday season, and appealed to persons that if they are going to drink, they must appoint a designated driver.

He pointed out that when one sustains life-changing injuries it takes upwards of four years to fully recover psychologically, and that this is especially devastating if the injured party is the main breadwinner.

Mr. Henry is asking persons to be respectful on the nation’s roads, reduce the use of cell phones while driving, observe the road code, and be mindful of the unbearable trauma associated with grieving for a loved one who has died in an unnecessary traffic crash.
