The Full Story

Effective yesterday (August 14), the Transport Authority reopened 3,683 spaces for Route Taxis and 229 Rural Stage Carriages islandwide.

The routes have been reopened to satisfy the increased demand for legally operated public transportation services, and to encourage illegal operators to get registered.

In an interview with JIS News, Communications Coordinator at the Transport Authority, Merdina Callum, said the reopening forms part of the agency’s strategy to build a people-centred public land transportation system.

“Commuters have been requesting transportation in certain areas. Those areas are underserviced. They probably have taxis or buses, but they are not enough or not operating in a timely manner,” she said.

Some of the routes that are available include Lionel Town to Portland Cottage, Clarendon; Junction to Gutters, St. Elizabeth; Brown’s Town to Higgins Land, St. Ann; Montego Bay to Granville, St. James; and Santa Cruz to Black River, St. Elizabeth.

The complete list of routes will be published on the Authority’s website at ta.org.jm.

Interested persons may also contact the Authority’s Customer Care Centre at 618-0959 for further information. The routes will remain open until September 29.
