The Full Story

The Transport Authority (TA) now has an office in the parish of Westmoreland.

The agency had a soft opening of the facility, situated at Dunbar Plaza in Savanna-la-Mar from where it has started serving public passenger and commercial vehicle operators since February 9.

Western Regional Manager, Ralston Smith, told JIS News that the new office forms part of the TA’s mandate to take its services to the public.

He said the Savanna-la-Mar branch will operate as a one-stop shop for clients across Westmoreland and sections of the adjoining parishes of St. Elizabeth and Hanover.

This, Mr. Smith added, will save persons from having to travel all the way to Montego Bay to process their licence applications.

“We will be processing all types of road licence applications…stage carriage…route taxi applications…contract carriage applications as well as commercial carriers, both private and public,” he said.

Mr. Smith has assured that the office will endeavour to provide efficient service to the over 2,600 motor vehicle operators expected to use the facility.

“We have set up all the mechanisms to ensure that the system is very efficient and seamless in terms of how the processing takes place (because) there is great demand…and the Authority must respond to the need,” he added.

Meanwhile, Acting General Manager of Communications and Human Resource and Administration, Petra-Kene Williams, told JIS News that the Westmoreland office’s opening brought the TA’s thrust to boost service delivery in western Jamaica into sharper focus.

“It means that the Authority’s reach has been expanded significantly to the western end of the island. We have a regional office in Montego Bay…however, we found that many of our customers in Westmoreland were not being (adequately) serviced. So we are happy to be in Westmoreland…we are happy to be able to expand our service delivery and we are looking forward to seeing greater compliance (from) both public transportation sector and…commercial (carriage operators) in terms of their licences,” she added.
