The Full Story

The Transport Authority of Jamaica is in the process of establishing 100 new routes islandwide.

Making his contribution to the 2017/18 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on April 12, Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Mike Henry, said this would result in 2,500 new licences being offered to operators.

He also disclosed that the Government has authorised the use of seven-seater motor cars as route taxis, once the units are properly insured for the public passenger vehicles sector.

In addition, the Minister announced that the Transport Authority will be introducing the concept of a ‘city taxi’, to be operated in major townships islandwide, with a radius of up to three miles.

Mr. Henry said the vehicles will be required to have wheelchair access. “We have two models ready on the ground to show what that relates to and how we must build the industry in its economic structure,” he said.

The Transport Authority is the agency charged with the responsibility for the licensing of all public and commercial vehicles and the regulating and monitoring of public transportation in Jamaica.
