Mrs. Guntley Brady was speaking at the resort’s 14th annual awards ceremony held at the property in Montego Bay on March 2, which saw some 40 members of staff receiving awards for exemplary service to the hotel and tourism industry.

Approximately $1.5 million worth of prizes were handed out to these workers with the coveted manager and employee of the year awards going to Zerica Lawrence and Gregory Hall respectively.

The Director General also commended the resort for its part in providing employment for many Jamaicans and supporting farmers by purchasing their produce.

“Your success is not only measured by the fact that this property is attracting more guests and winning more international awards; it is also measured by the fact that the resort provides employment for some 800 Jamaicans and that it contributes significantly to other sectors of the economy by purchasing millions of dollars worth of goods from our farmers and local manufacturers each year and in employing local talents to entertain visitors.

“It is these linkages that tourism has with agriculture, manufacturing and entertainment that make our hospitality industry the engine of growth for the entire economy”, Mrs. Guntley Brady pointed out.

She observed that it was a tribute to the workers that the country had become a premier destination for tourists.

“Last year we welcomed over 2.48 million visitors to our shores, representing a 6.6 per cent increase in stop-over arrivals and a 30.9 per cent increase in cruise passenger arrivals.
