Thanksgiving Service to Mark Beginning of Heritage Week

A national service of thanksgiving and remembrance on October 10 to mark the passing of Hurricane Ivan, will signal the beginning of Heritage Week, which will be observed from October 10 to 18.
Information Minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman speaking at yesterday’s (October 4) post cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, said the ecumenical service would combine the elements of heritage and thanksgiving, and would be held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay.
Governor General, His Excellency Sir Howard Cooke and Prime Minister P.J. Patterson will attend and participate in the service, which will be carried live.
Church services will also be held in all parishes on October 17, with the theme of thanksgiving being highlighted.
Come National Heroes Day, Monday, October 18, a number of events will be held. At 8:30 a.m. individuals receiving national honours and awards for 2004 will be presented with their insignias on the lawns of King’s House. At 10:00 a.m. the Ranny Williams Entertainment centre will be the venue for Heritage Fest, story telling and cultural presentations.
Meanwhile, 11 of the Olympic and Paralympic medallists will participate in the laying of floral tributes for all the national heroes at 4:00 p.m. the same day at the National Heroes Park. There will be cultural presentations as well.
A special programme of events starting from Thursday, October 14 to Monday, October 18, has also been arranged to honour the 2004 Olympic team, which will also recognize the paralympic medallists.
Throughout the week, the Jamaica Library Service will mount related exhibits in the Parish and Branch libraries.
Minister Whiteman said the bringing together of the heritage week events, the national service of thanksgiving and the celebration of Olympic history should bring a level of satisfaction to the Jamaican people.
