Ten Judges Promoted

Some 10 Judges were sworn in to higher offices today by Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke, at King’s House.
They are: Howard Cooke as Judge of the Court of Appeal, effective April 14; Karl S. Harrison as Acting Judge of the Court of Appeal as of April 19; Courtney Daye as permanent Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, effective April 14; Ingrid Mangatal as permanent Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court as of April 14; Jennifer Straw as Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court with effect from April 14; Almarie Sinclair Haynes as Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, effective April 14.
Also sworn in were Bryan Sykes as Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court as of April 14; Christine McDonald appointed Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, with effect from April 14; Leighton Pusey as Acting Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court as of April 19; and Audre Lindo appointed as Master in Chambers in the Supreme Court, effective April 14.
In his address to the judges, the Governor General congratulated them on their promotions, and urged them to remain totally impartial in administering justice.Sir Howard also reminded them of the depth of trust that was being placed in them.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice, Lensley Wolfe reassured the judges of the basis on which they were appointed. “I wish to assure you that none of you need have reservations about your appointment. All of you are eminently suitable for the appointment which you have received,” he said.
“Your task is to ensure that the confidence we have reposed in you has not been misplaced,” he added.President of the Appeal Court, Ian Forte congratulated the judges and endorsed the Chief Justice’s comments, reiterating that the judges were appointed “purely on their own merit”.
Replying on behalf of the appointees, Justice Cooke thanked the Judicial Services Commission for its commendations, and assured the members that the oaths taken were not mere repetitions but signalled their constant dedication to their sworn duty.
