Supervise Children’s Use of Social Media

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Carol Palmer, is encouraging parents to supervise their children’s use of social media.

Mrs. Palmer said perpetrators of human trafficking often use information gleaned from social media posts to target and trap their victims.

“I am saying to you parents, even when your children feel you are too ‘faas’ (inquisitive), faas some more, because that is how you are going to assist them,” she pointed out.

Mrs. Palmer was addressing Seventh-day Adventists at the West Jamaica Conference Centre in Montego Bay on Saturday (August 27).

She called on members of the church to join the Government in educating the public about human trafficking.

“As a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church and the Christian community in Jamaica, I want the church to rise up and assist us to educate our people. Research shows that when the people are educated, the incidence is less,” she pointed out.

Mrs. Palmer is also encouraging persons to report suspected cases of human trafficking to the police, Office of the Children’s Registry (OCR), among other authorities.
