Students Encouraged To Believe In Possibilities

October 19, 2010

The Full Story

Students have been encouraged to believe in their potential to be top achievers, by Production Manager at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Enthrose Campbell.
“Believe that Jamaica can give me the opportunities that I need to become the person I want to be. If you believe ‘I can, I will, I must,’ you can move forward,” Miss Campbell told students of Somerset All Age School, in Manchester, on October 14.
The institution was celebrating National Heritage Week, highlighting the legacy of the country’s National Heroes, with support from the JIS in the form of booklets and posters on the six National Heroes and one Heroine, and a digital video disk (DVD), which covers much of the country’s heritage.

Production Manager at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Enthrose Campbell (right), presented a package containing posters and a digital video disc (DVD) on Jamaica’s national heroes and symbols, to Principal of the Somerset All-age School in Manchester, Maureen Dwyer, on October 14. JIS donated heritage materials to several schools across the island during National Heritage Week 2010, which was observed from October 10 to 18.

“They all have set a pace for us; we have to now create heroes. Our heritage are things that make us distinctive, and your heritage must be used to understand where Jamaica is coming from, so that you can dictate where you want Jamaica to go. It is in your hands, you decide where you want to go,” Miss Campbell charged the students.
In accepting the package, Principal of the school, Maureen Dwyer said the “wonderful” gifts will help the institution to meet part of its set goals. “One of the objectives of the school’s improvement plan is to help the students to develop culturally, to let them be culturally aware, and I am sure that this package will only enhance our cultural programme in the school,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the New Green Primary and Junior High School in the parish, where the students had their celebration the same day, Information Officer at the JIS, Garfield Angus handed over educational materials depicting Jamaica’s heritage.
He charged the students to “use them as part of your development, and learn something from our Heroes and Heroine, how their story can inspire you to be great. And, teachers, remember that these are tools to be used in preparing our students to be tomorrow’s greats,” he said.

Students of the New Green Primary and Junior High School in Manchester, enjoyed the musical selections during the ‘Sing Along’ segment of their Heritage Day activities held at the school on Thursday, October 14. National Heritage Week 2010 was observed from October 10 to 18 under the theme: ‘I Believe in Jamaica…Our people, Our Land and our Heritage’.

For her part, Principal of the school, Blossom Foster, said she was elated for the booklets and posters, and that “the lives of the students will be greatly enriched.”
The JIS team, led by Special Projects Manager, Latoya Crossman also visited and provided support for heritage celebrations at Ascot High School, in St. Catherine.
