Street lamps to be converted to LED

Several street lights across the island will be converted to LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps as an energy and cost saving measure.
The lamps, which will be converted, are currently HPB (hydroxyphenyl benzoxazole) bulbs.
Making his contribution to the 2010/11 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representative, State Minister for Local Government Reform, Hon. Robert Montague said that the US$2 million project is being done in collaboration with the World Bank, the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ), and the Development Bank of Jamaica.
“(The conversion of) HPS bulbs to LED bulbs across the country, will in turn save us on energy cost as the life of the LED bulbs is about 10 times that of the HPS bulbs,” he said.
In the meantime, he said that the Local Government Department is currently in dialogue with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to develop a web-based street lighting database system.
The database will allow for the identification of street lamps through an agreed coding system for applications, installation, repairs and maintenance.
It will allow each parish council to generate and utilise reports to confirm and certify field installations and functioning of lights prior to billing.
