STATEMENT BY THE MOST HON. P. J. PATTERSON, ON, PC, QC, MP PRIME MINISTER ON FORMER PRESIDENT ARISTIDE

Ever since the arrival of former President Aristide, he and representatives of the Government have been in dialogue.
For a variety of reasons, the Government of Jamaica, with the consent of former President Aristide, has been engaged in efforts to establish a choice of alternatives, should it become necessary or desirable for him and his family to be temporarily located elsewhere.
In this regard, we are extremely grateful for the readiness of President Obosanjo to offer suitable facilities for temporary relocation in Nigeria.
His decision reflects the renowned generosity of Nigeria and accords with the solidarity which the African Union has already expressed with the Caribbean position.
The unfolding situation will determine the exact timing of any option to be exercised, and no words are sufficient to express appreciation for the ready response of Nigeria.
In the meantime, it is expected that the Aristides will continue to enjoy a peaceful family reunion in Jamaica.
