St. James PC Names Street after Lloyd Young

The St. James Parish Council in recognition of one of the outstanding sons of the parish, philanthropist and fitness trainer, Lloyd George Young O.D. J.P., has renamed First Street, Albion, Montego Bay, Lloyd Young Drive, in his honour.
The move was initiated through a resolution passed by the Council, with an official ceremony to mark the unveiling of the street sign with its new name, taking place Wednesday (September 1).
Mr. Young, aged 90, had been living on First Street for many years. He is the founder of Lloyd Young Health Studio and has been a voluntary social worker in St. James for years, serving organizations and individuals. He is considered an expert in physiotherapy and body building, and was the first person to be crowned Mr. Jamaica, in 1949.
He has trained many individuals to national bodybuilding competition level, as well as to high placing in the Mr. Universe competition. Appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1968, he was bestowed with the national honour of the Order of Distinction (O.D.) in 1982, and was awarded the Key to the City of Montego Bay in 1983, among other local and international awards.

Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Cecil Davis, in his address at the ceremony, described the occasion as one in which the country, in general, and the city of Montego Bay, in particular, want to show to Mr. Young their appreciation for his contributions to community and nation building.
“He has really made us proud, and we are happy that the St. James Parish Council and the citizens of Montego Bay have seen it fit to honour him in this small way, but this is something that will outlive Mr. Young and all of us,” he pointed out.
Custos of St. James, Hon Ewen Corrodus, described the event as a meaningful exercise for an icon of health awareness and promotion in the parish. He said that the name Lloyd Young was synonymous with fitness training, body building, boxing promotion and philanthropy, in St. James, across Jamaica and beyond.
“He leads by example, having distinguished himself as the first Mr. Jamaica, and continuing this trend in leading and training young men and women to accomplish more than they ever thought was possible,” he noted.
He described Mr. Young as a “true role model, mentor and benefactor” to many, helping numerous people through his special skills. He said that it is a fitting tribute to Mr. Young to have the street, on which he has lived and worked for so many years, named in his honour.
In response, Mr. Young declared that he considers it a very high honour to have the street renamed after him. He said that it was even more meaningful being a Montegonian by birth and having dedicated a great portion of his life to helping his fellow men, while living and doing business on the same street for many years.
Mr. Young expressed happiness in the fact that he was well enough to share in the occasion. He said that he is no stranger to honours, but described this occasion as “the sweetest of the sweet”.
