The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has expressed sadness at the death of young student athlete, Saymar Ramsey.

Ramsey, a member of the Spot Valley High basketball team, collapsed and died on his way home after playing for his school in the ISSA/Western Conference Under-19 basketball game against Cornwall College last Friday.

“This is heart-rending news. I join with the family, friends, classmates, teammates, coaches and teachers of Ramsey. We should remember them in our thoughts and prayers. This is a difficult loss that nobody expected and we’re all shocked by it,” Minister Grange said.

In recent times the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Ministry of Health and other critical stakeholders have initiated various programmes to promote the screening of student athletes.

“I use this opportunity to encourage schools, parents and the different sporting associations to take advantage of opportunities for screening where they exist,” the Minister said.
