The Full Story

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has given the assurance that it is committed to working with the Government of Jamaica to find the best solution for CXC candidates in Jamaica, who have been affected by the recent unrest.
In a statement today (May 28), the regional examination body said it has been in constant contact with the Ministry of Education and its Local Registrar at the Overseas Examinations Commission “during these difficult times.”
The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) tests, administered by CXC, are still in progress.
As at May 25, there were 56 CAPE and 28 CSEC papers remaining to be handed out, involving more than 20,000 candidates, the exam body stated. “Our examinations are offered in 16 participating territories throughout the region and any change to the timetable for these examinations will require that a separate but equivalent replacement examination be offered,” the release added.
The Council has established procedures, which have been used in many cases where candidates experience hardship or adverse circumstances before and during the examinations.
These include statistical procedures, which allows for a comparative analysis of candidate performance, teachers’ estimation of the expected grades of candidates, and a review of the candidates’ performance on components of the examinations already completed, including the School-based Assessment (SBA), the press statement informed.
It said: “CXC has noted the proactive measures taken by the Overseas Examinations Commission/Ministry of Education to facilitate the writing of the examinations by candidates from the affected areas and we believe that these measures, together with the procedures described above, would adequately respond to the situation.”
“This method is well established and documented, and has been used in at least three situations in the past, when large numbers of students were unable to complete all of their examination papers,” the Council further said.
