Sligoville Sports Complex Project to Receive $58.7 Million

A sum of $58.7 million has been allocated to the Sligoville Sports Complex Project in the 2007/08 Estimates of Expenditure, which is now before the House of Representatives.
Funded by a grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the project, which began in December 2005 and is slated for completion in April 2007, is being implemented by the Development Bank of Jamaica.
Its objectives are to provide schools and clubs in the parish of St. Catherine with a venue which can support more than one sporting activity simultaneously, and assist in the development of their sporting programmes.
The project also seeks to provide employment for persons in Sligoville and surrounding areas, as industries, such as agriculture and service industries will benefit from the same opportunity.
Another objective of the programme is to provide the country with an alternate sport venue for competitive events and to offer teams from outside Jamaica year round weather training, facilities thus attracting foreign exchange earnings for the country.
Among the anticipated physical targets for the fiscal year are to: construct playing fields, and complete finishing works on buildings. Construction of the building is 90 percent complete.
