Shortage of Fire Trucks to be Addressed

March 10, 2004

The Full Story

The islandwide shortage of fire trucks will soon be addressed with the provision of funds to replace derelict units.
Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman while addressing the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Monday (March 8) said, “the Minister of Finance (and Planning) has been making some progress in following through on the request (for new units).”
“What the Minister reported is that there are financing proposals, which would allow the Government to acquire the trucks and he is pursuing these as a matter of urgency,” he said.
Senator Whiteman also informed that some garbage trucks were to be purchased to enhance the National Solid Waste Management Authority’s (NSWMA) fleet.
Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Portia Simpson Miller, at Tuesday’s (March 9) Standing Finance Committee meeting at Gordon House, pointed to the needs of the fire and garbage collection services and markets. She added that the Ministry was working closely with the Ministry of Finance to address the problems.
Dr. Davies, who was also present at the Committee meeting, said that a comprehensive assessment of the capital needs of the fire service and garbage collection had been undertaken. He informed that the financing of these services should be met by the property taxes, but the money being collected was not enough and as a result, these services were being supported from the Consolidated Fund.
