Several Police Stations To Be Rehabilitated

Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips has said that several police stations are slated for rehabilitation in this fiscal year.
The Falmouth Police Station in Trelawny is one of the many stations singled out by the Minister for attention. He said a new station would be constructed to replace the dilapidated building.
“We expect that in the course of this fiscal year that the actual construction will begin. We are at the point where we are in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and we have a submission, which if approved by the Cabinet, will facilitate the financing of the construction,” he disclosed.
Minister Phillips was responding to questions posed by Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Derrick Smith at the Standing Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday (April 6) at Gordon House.
Dr. Phillips told the meeting that work would be done on the May Pen Police Station in Clarendon. Last month, Cabinet approved the award of a contract to HDB Construction Company Limited to begin work on the station.
Other police stations to be rehabilitated during the year include Alexandria in St. Ann; Port Antonio in Portland; Castleton in St. Mary; Balaclava inSt. Elizabeth; Christiana, Mile Gully, Kendall and Cross Keys in Manchester; Seaview in Kingston; Frankfield in Clarendon; Spanish Town and Linstead in St. Catherine and the Bath police station in St. Thomas.
“We are trying to find ways of addressing the urgent need of police stations in these areas,” he said.
The National Security Minister said that last year, rehabilitation and improvement work were done on at least 20 police stations islandwide.
“We have also done improvement work in relation to reception areas in places such as Constant Spring and Half-Way-Tree in Kingston, Mandeville and others,” the Minister said.
He pointed out that there was need for this work to continue and pointed out that the Ministry would be finding innovative ways to finance the work.
