SDC to spearhead five projects during community month

Five community projects in St. Catherine, Portland, Trelawny, Hanover and Manchester, valued at some $590,000 will be spearheaded by the Social Development Commission (SDC), in collaboration with its parish offices and other communities islandwide.
The projects to be undertaken are the rehabilitation of the Westchester Community Centre in Portmore, St. Catherine; renovation of the Jackson Town Community Centre in Trelawny; refurbishing of the Comfort Community Centre in Comfort, Manchester; the restoration of an elderly person’s home in Woodsville, Hanover; and a Dengue ‘Clear-Out’ Project in Buff Bay, Portland.
The projects are part of activities to celebrate Community Month, which is being observed from November 1 to 30 under the theme: ‘Build Your Community Mek it Safe’.
Field Services Supervisor of the SDC, Travis Graham, said that although the projects are in five parishes, work on each activity will be undertaken by about three or four SDC parish offices and communities, in an effort to promote inter-parish partnerships among stakeholders.
“This is to promote cross-community working together on projects through voluntarism. We also want to enhance local partnerships with stakeholders in selective communities and to increase the visibility of the organisation,” he said.
Mr. Graham along with Governance Director of the SDC, Sherine Walker Francis were guests at the Jamaica Information Service ‘Think Tank’,
