SDC to Re-Open Branch Office in St. Thomas Sept. 27

September 25, 2004

The Full Story

The Social Development Commission (SDC) has begun refurbishing its branch office in Springfield, St. Thomas for re-opening by Monday, September 27.
Regional Manager of the SDC, Luther Cummings told JIS News that since damage was done to the roof and parts of the building by Hurricane Ivan about two weeks ago, employees have been operating from another building.
He said that in addition to the physical damage to the building, some documents and equipment were damaged during the hurricane.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cummings said that two projects, which had started but had to be discontinued because of the hurricane, would be back on stream as soon as power and telephone lines were restored.
The two projects, funded by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), include the building of a new Health Centre in White Hall, and the construction of sanitary conveniences for 15 families in the Prospect community. “As soon as we get back, we should be pushing them full steam,” Mr. Cummings said.
Manager of P J’s Interior Construction, Japeth Dwyer told JIS News that work on the SDC building was being hampered because of the lack of electricity in the area, forcing his workmen to use tools manually. Mr. Dwyer said the repairs should be completed this weekend, including painting, plumbing and the installation of electrical fittings.
