The Full Story

The public is being advised that several roads in the Corporate Area will be closed between Wednesday (April 8) and Thursday (April 9), to facilitate the free movement of traffic and security arrangements surrounding the visit of President of the United States (US), Barack Obama and CARICOM Heads of State and Government.

“With the hosting of some 12 visiting CARICOM Heads, and the President of the United States, there will be significant traffic diversions at various points, ” said Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer.

She was addressing a Jamaica House Media Briefing today (April 7), at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Affected roads are Camp Road, Arnold Road, Half-Way-Tree Road, Old Hope Road, Slipe Road, Caledonia Road, Caledonia Crescent and Caledonia Avenue, Arthur Wint Drive, Central Avenue, Eureka Crescent, North Avenue, Lady Musgrave Road, Oxford Road, Belmont Road, Haining Road, Knutsford Boulevard and Trinidad Terrace.

“Knutsford Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5:00 pm (Wednesday) afternoon, and will open again in the afternoon, the following day (Thursday),” Minister Falconer informed.

She appealed for understanding of the measures being undertaken.

President Obama is expected to visit Jamaica while on his way to the Sixth Summit of the Americas in Panama.

Among the activities planned for the visit include: a bilateral meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister; a CARICOM-US Summit at the University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters; a wreath laying ceremony at National Heroes Park; and a Youth Forum at the University of the West Indies.

Logistics Officer at the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), Colonel David Cummings, said members of the public can view the procession as it passes, but for security reasons, no time schedule will be announced.

He said the public must obey instructions from the police, and not enter restricted areas.

“Members of the public are welcome to view from the verges where pedestrians would normally walk, except in instances where we have restrictions in place with police barriers, police personnel or cars, for added security reasons,” he said.

Colonel Cummings noted that the security plans being put in place “are for the collective mutual security of our visitors, as well as the protection of our own citizens here in Jamaica.”
