The Full Story

Since the start of the year, road fatalities and collisions have been reduced when compared to the corresponding period last year.

This was disclosed by Senior Superintendent and Commanding Officer of the Traffic and Highway Division, Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Calvin Allen, during a press conference at the Office of the Police Commissioner in St. Andrew, on July 11.

“For the first time in over two and a half years, we are seeing where road fatalities for the current year are behind the previous year,” he noted.

To date, there have been 197 deaths on the nation’s road, eight less than were recorded last year. He noted that last year this time, there were 191 collisions, while there have been 170 so far this year.

Mr. Allen said the JCF will remain vigilant and double their efforts across all the main corridors across the island in a bid to ensure that law and order remains on the nation’s roadways.

He urged motorists to adhere to the rules of the road to ensure that the figures remain low.

In the meantime, he said the number of fatalities regarding motorcycle deaths has also been reduced. “There is a multiplicity of approaches that have been taken and we are seeing the positive results from them,” he added.

Mr. Allen is also urging parents to monitor their children during the summer period, particularly since most of them are not in school at this time.
