Firefighting activities at the Riverton Disposal Site continued overnight and into today.

Up to noon today more than 90% of the area, which was under fire, was totally extinguished and covered with top soil. An additional forty (40) trucks and three (3) front end loaders joined the effort. ALPART and WINDALCO have extended the loan of two (2) D10 “bulldozers” to advance the extinguishing efforts. Front end loaders and trucks from the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the National Works Agency have remained part of the operation.

Based on the achievements of the firefighters to date, significant reduction in the levels of smoke emission is expected and was evident today.

Operations will continue through the afternoon and into the night. We wish to advise that we are optimizing the resources available in order to ensure that the fire is extinguished in the shortest possible time.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management deeply regrets the occurrence and resulting impacts of this incident.

The ODPEM will continue to monitor the situation and to provide timely updates.
