The Full Story

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in consultation with the Jamaica Fire Brigade is advising that there currently are no flames at the Riverton City Waste Disposal site. The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) continues to conduct mopping-up activities.

The routine post-extinguishing process involves a physical search of the area to identify hot spots, and the application of water and/or soil to these spots.

With the fire now extinguished, the operation has transitioned from Response to Recovery. The trucks will continue to haul cover material to effect immediate action, should this become necessary. While there are no open flames on the site, there remains the possibility for rekindling of small pockets.

While there have been continuous improvements, we wish to advise that there is still the possibility of smoke nuisance affecting communities in the vicinity of the disposal site. The smoke has been and will continue to decrease.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management is committed to providing continuous coordination as we work with our partners to bring the situation to a satisfactory conclusion.
