The Full Story

Fifty retirees of the former Ministries of Agriculture and Fisheries and  Industry, Investment  and Commerce were honoured on March 31, for their years of dedicated service.

The ceremony,  which was held at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel, in Kingston, saw  the  retirees being honoured  for one to 10 years  service,   11 to 24 years  and 25 years and over.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries,  Donovan Stanberry,  congratulated the  retirees.

“To serve the government for many years and retire is a big achievement. I know that typically, people who work with government usually enter just after school and stay for (some) 37 or 40 years.  I have to salute the tenacity of those who have served and served well,” he said.

Mr. Stanberry thanked the retired civil servants for their “labour of love” in ensuring that tasks were executed to ensure that government operations function at optimal level.

“The complexity of government, the breadth of issues that you have to grapple with, the kinds of personalities that you have to deal with and the pressure to satisfy our clients who are the public of this country, who rightly demand that they are served with courtesy, even under trying circumstances, is no small feat,” he noted.

Meanwhile, guest speaker at the event, Vice President of Government Affairs for Scotiabank Group, Dr. Wayne Henry, praised the retirees for their exemplary service, and encouraged them to enjoy their retirement years.

“As you take time to rest and renew, you can reset your priorities. Even though you have contributed so much, and you have done so much to add value, now you may  find yourself becoming fulfilled in a whole new way, as you pursue your passion,” he said.
