Residents of Railway Lane/Barracks Road Relocate to Providence Heights

April 18, 2004

The Full Story

Government’s move to relocate residents from Railway Lane and Barracks Road in St. James to the Providence Heights housing development is on target with 52 residents already receiving keys to their new homes.
In fact, 10 of the new homeowners have already moved in, National Housing Trust (NHT) Chairman, Kingsley Thomas announced recently, while addressing the launch of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay’s Bikeathon at Sunset Beach Resort in the city.
The Providence Heights community is being developed under Relocation 2000, a programme introduced by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson to provide persons in inner city areas with decent and affordable living conditions. The NHT is spearheading the development, which comprises the construction of 320 housing units with associated infrastructure.
Noting that Relocation 2000 was also being carried out in a number of inner city communities in Kingston, Mr. Thomas said that 5,000 housing units would be constructed over the next three to four years, at three sites in the Corporate Area.
“We are providing two and three bedrooms and apartments complete with infrastructure and swimming pool”, he informed. He pointed out that the swimming pools would operate as communal facilities and would be properly fenced and supervised.
The NHT Chairman emphasised that one important component of Relocation 2000 was a concentration on social reengineering. He said that new values and attitudes must be instilled in persons benefiting under the programme, “so that they can make a major shift as to how they relate to one another as neighbours, regardless of economic positions, race, religious or political persuasion”.
