Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, says the Government is looking at overhauling the four Regional Health Authorities.

He noted that there is too much duplication in the system, and in areas such as maintenance, procurement and project management there is limited capacity.

Dr. Tufton was addressing the House of Representatives on May 3, during his contribution to the 2017/18 Sectoral Debate.

The Minister said there is an ongoing study to reform the health system, which is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry, World Health Organization and the World Bank.

He said the deliverables will include a 10-year National Strategic Plan and a three- year Implementation Plan with costing and indicators to monitor progress/achievements.

“This process of restructuring the health system will, among other things, provide data on human resource requirements and will guide the public-sector reform process regarding the needs and appropriateness of human resource for the health system, including future requirements for health professionals,” Dr. Tufton said.

The data now being collected will also guide the restructuring of the system of health delivery in Jamaica, looking closely at the Regional Health Authorities; and ensure greater efficiency, effectiveness and the improved quality of care and services.
