Region Three to Launch Agricultural Fair April 20

Region Three of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, will launch its Schools Agriculture Science and Environmental Competition and Fair, at the Almond Tree Restaurant in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on April 20 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The event, designed to inform the public about agriculture in schools in the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary and Trelawny, as well as to provide an opportunity for institutions to showcase what they have been doing, will be launched under the theme; ‘Maintaining Food Security, Keeping Jamaican Jobs’.
Education Officer and Chairman of the Steering Committee, Neil Henry, told JIS News that the day’s activities “are intended to showcase the efforts of students, teachers and schools with projects and programmes, as well as issues relating to agriculture and the environment”.
He explained that schools in the region would enter in three categories – primary (grades one to six); lower secondary (grades seven to nine); and upper secondary (grades 10 and 11).
Mr. Henry pointed out that there would be “attractive prizes, including tuition grants for the Champion Boy and Girl as well as a teacher’s prize”.
He noted that the event would feature displays and exhibits from participating schools as well as from public and private organizations.
Also expected to take part are representatives from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture; the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA); the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); the University of the West Indies (UWI); the College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE); and the sponsors.
