Refurbished Community Centre Opens At York Town

The refurbished York Town community centre in Clarendon was officially opened on October 19.
Constructed in the 1970s, the centre was renovated under the ‘Lift Up’ Jamaica Programme, with inputs from the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), the Social Development Commission (SDC), the Member of Parliament and community members.
In his address at the opening ceremony, Member of Parliament for Southwest Clarendon, Charles Learmond pointed out that the centre was one of three such centres in the southern part of the parish, which had been upgraded under the ‘Lift Up’ Jamaica Programme.
He explained that initially, young persons from the community would use the centre to enhance their skills in Food Preparation.
“Whatever training or programmes we have here, will certainly be very effective in getting our young people to learn. I want to commend the management committee for their efforts and ask the young people of Lionel Town and its environs to support the activities at the centre,” he said.
The centre would also be used to host a computer training programme and a home-work programme for students aged 6 to 12 years from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.
There are also netball and basketball courts and a football field at the centre.
